Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the right to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the system already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review specific situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
