New research suggests that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs must be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to original mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication report a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
