The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
